Chairs on Dock, 2020

This photograph was exhibited at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Waters Rising: A View From Our Backyard, a fitting theme given the museum’s location above a rain garden already vulnerable to sea-level rise in Norfolk, Virginia. The image captures a quiet irony: the lake house, an emblem of retreat and escape into nature, stands on the brink of submersion. As the waterline grazes the edge of the dock, the viewer’s eye is pulled toward the bright chairs reflected on the surface, their vibrancy contrasting with the dock as it dissolves into the blue below. We are left to sit and observe, knowing the surrounding houses are next in line.
