Often viscerally shocking, the art in this gallery confronts the enormous yet largely invisible ecological and environmental justice issues of industrial meat production — invisible because the slaughter of animals and other ugly processes generally take place behind closed doors in factories designed to conceal them. Moreover, these industrial operations generally occur in places that prohibit access or even criminalize visual observation and reporting in order to prevent the public from seeing the violence, filth, and injustice within — injustice that is transspecies in scope. As this gallery demonstrates, however, artists and activists use a remarkable variety of visual modes to visualize the invisible and express concern about treatment of nonhuman animals, pollution, climate impacts, and worker inequity in the meat industry.
