Underwater HOA: Underwater Marker 8, 2018
This photograph captures a sign Cortada designed for his project, Underwater, which visually represents the distance properties sit above sea level. The painted sign features a blue-and-white background representing water, with the number 8 slowly being overtaken by the rising tide, depicted by the white, squiggly mark across the bottom. The sign is placed in front of a household that appears to be at an elevation of 8 feet above sea level, as determined using the Eyes on the Rise elevation database toolkit. Cortada’s artwork and project prompt us to reflect on our relationship with the environment, with a physical piece serving as a reminder of our presence on Mother Nature’s path.
