Eve Mosher, American
HighWaterLine, 2007
This photograph, taken by Curtis Hamilton for The Canary Project, shows Eve Mosher’s HighWaterLine crossing a roadway. Running 70 miles across Manhattan and Brooklyn, Mosher attempted to spark public conversation regarding the issues of climate change and sea level rise. The blue chalk line, supplemented by beacons in grassy areas, sat at ten feet above sea level, a height that, at the time, would have represented a hundred-year flood, but by 2050 could be a twenty-year event. As Mosher walked, drawing the line, she passed out flyers, explained the project, and promoted workshops, booklets, and a website that were also parts of the project. During Hurricane Sandy, the blue line was engulfed. Many HighWaterLine projects in other cities followed. Label by Joslyn Colglazier
