John Gerrard, Irish

STANDARD, 2023

The depiction of surrender and peace, this “flag” stands starkly against the bright blue sky. Instead of white fabric, this flag is made up of water vapor, evaporating out of the tall pole. Although this thin pole may look frail, the flag’s purpose is one of hope and optimism as it stands proud against the desert background. It is Gerrard's hope towards a brighter future that is not reliant upon fossil fuels. Gerrard uses a computer graphic design software coupled with accurate depictions of the Mojave Desert, located in Nevada. This work could be used as a combat to AI and data centers as well, as Gerrard shows that art, even computerized, holds far more meaning because a human created it. Label by Logan Edwards
